The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to make wide receiver Gehrig Dieter a familiar face for the 2021 season with news that he’s signed a reserve/futures deal for next season.

The Chiefs added Dieter to their upcoming 90-man roster that will become official after the new league year begins in March, which means Dieter will have a chance to officially make it five seasons in K.C. after first signing with the team as a rookie free agent nearly four years ago.

Dieter has alternated between the practice squad and active roster for the Chiefs since landing with them after going undrafted following the 2017 NFL Draft. He took a circuitous path through the college ranks—from SMU to Bowling Green to Alabama for his final season. From there, he earned enough attention as a developmental receiver and the Chiefs brought him in.

To Dieter’s credit, he’s slowly earned the team’s trust as a known commodity who knows the playbook and can serve as a wide receiver contributing on special teams coverage. He made his NFL debut in 2018 after spending the entire 2017 season on the practice squad.

Gehrig Dieter signed a reserve/futures deal with the Chiefs.

Since that time, he’s played in 10 total games over the last three seasons, including four this year, with a total of 63 offensive snaps and 124 special teams snaps in that span (although he was on injured reserve for part of the 2019 season).. He’s caught two passes for 32 yards in his official NFL career.

Dieter joins plenty of other wide receiver hopefuls for the Chiefs among futures signings, including Chad Williams, Antonio Callaway, Dalton Schoen, Maurice Ffrench, and Jody Fortson.

Next. The Chiefs should absolutely chase J.J. Watt. dark
