Senior Bowl Letdowns

Spencer Brown, T, Northern Iowa

I was extremely high on Spencer Brown heading into Senior Bowl week but, unfortunately, the Northern Iowa product did not live up to expectations. The gargantuan tackle looked rusty and sloppy. There are positive athletic traits and a nasty streak that teams will want to work with, but Brown struggled mightily at times throughout the week. During the game, Brown got beat a handful of times when he was caught reaching or failed to redirect and anchor against opposing linemen. Brown was always seen as a prospect, but the Senior Bowl showed that he may be farther away from starting than some thought.

Deonte Brown, G, Alabama

Deonte Brown was getting some buzz late in the college season, but his Senior Bowl performance likely snuffed that out like a wet blanket over a fire. The former Alabama guard looked slow, and there were already low expectations about his movement skills. Furthermore, Brown was known as a power player but really failed to show that this past week. The hulking guard looked off balance and slow to the punch on more than one occasion, leaving his projection teetering on the cliff of a day two selection.

Drake Jackson, C, Kentucky

Similar to Spencer Brown, I had high expectations for Kentucky’s Drake Jackson, and I was similarly disappointed. Jackson failed to flash any elite skills, and while he was far from terrible he did not manage to stand out. Partnered with coming in on the light side during weigh-ins, Jackson’s stock is stagnant as a possible late day two selection who has limited upside as a potential starter.

Patrick Jones & Rashad Weaver, DE, Pittsburgh

I am lumping Jones and Weaver together here as their trajectories continue to be similar. Neither stood out as dynamic throughout the week; instead, they both looked like solid role players with limited upside. Jones and Weaver both have great motors, and that’s a plus for them, but they both appear to be limited by athletic ability and did not show anything at the Senior Bowl that might dispel those concerns.

Other Players Who Failed to Stand Out:

  • Sage Surratt, WR, Wake Forest
  • Divine Deablo, S, Virginia Tech
  • Hamsah Nasirildeen, S, Florida State
  • Quintin Morris, TE, Bowling Green
  • Elijah Mitchell, RB, Louisiana
  • Marvin Wilson, DT, Florida State
