A familiar face to Kansas City Chiefs fans will be joining the Detroit Lions organization as part of a completely revamped leadership team as former general manager John Dorsey has been hired as a senior personnel executive, per NFL reporter Tom Pelissero.

For a little while, the rumors surrounding Dorsey this offseason pointed to him and Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy as a potential package deal as general manager and head coach. Unfortunately for Bieniemy, that rumor was never tested given that the head coach-in-waiting was passed over for almost every single vacancy in the league—including the one in Detroit. Only the Houston Texans remain in search of a head coach.

As for the Lions, they decided to hire Dan Campbell away from the New Orleans Saints as their new head coach. They anchored the front office in Brad Holmes, who was hired away after two full decades working his way up the L.A. Rams organization as a former scout turned personnel exec.

Holmes has done well to add Dorsey to his stable of advisors given his incredible run of success in the NFL Draft especially. Dorsey joined the Chiefs back in 2013 with Andy Reid as head coach and the pair went right to work to turn around the franchise. Dorsey was responsible for trades for Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes. He was also the man who drafted Travis Kelce in the third round (2013) and Tyreek Hill in the fifth round (2015).

Dorsey and the Chiefs decided to part ways a bit early in 2018, and Dorsey went to work for the Cleveland Browns. In doing so, he helped stock a loaded pond with Baker Mayfield, Nick Chubb, Denzel Ward, and more. Unfortunately Dorsey has been fired from both organizations and leaked reasons point to communication concerns.

Dorsey spent the 2020 season helping the Philadelphia Eagles in an advisory capacity.
