Patrick Mahomes is just one of several injury concerns for Kansas City Chiefs
By Matt Conner
Bashaud Breeland
Lost in the news that Mahomes had been injured and the ensuing drama of a close game was the other injury news that happened late against the Browns that cornerback Bashaud Breeland was also being evaluated for a concussion.
When Breeland left the game against Cleveland late, it thinned out a secondary that was against the ropes as Baker Mayfield and company sought to take the lead. Fortunately the Chiefs defense stepped up and did a solid job down the stretch. Still that doesn’t answer the questions facing the Chiefs in the coming week.
Heading into the game, the Chiefs were already down a couple players among their cornerbacks. Earlier in the week, Rashad Fenton had been limited in practice with an ankle injury that has plagued him. The team also placed Deandre Baker on injured reserve, which means he’s completely out for the Chiefs as well. Without Breeland, the secondary was suddenly running low on options.
Fortunately the Chiefs have some solid young players in L’Jarius Sneed and Charvarius Ward to go with Breeland in their primary core. However, if Breeland is out due to a head injury, that will alter the team’s depth if Fenton also remains limited as well. Chris Lammons is available as is Antonio Hamilton, but the competition only gets tougher from here on out. If Breeland can set back in the lineup, it would be a huge boost to the defense.
