The Second String Offensive Line

Let’s be honest for a second: The Kansas City Chiefs offensive line has not been good recently. Patrick Mahomes has been running for his life and taking hits, while the run game hasn’t had very much push up front. When the Chiefs rolled out a starting offensive line that only included one guy who started the previous week, there was definitely some concern that the line could be a major issue for the Chiefs on Sunday. I don’t know that I would go so far as to say the offensive line was good, but I don’t think it was much of a drop off (if any) from how the starters have played the past couple of weeks.

Now, we could probably spend an entire post of its own debating if the solid offensive line play in this game is a compliment to the second string unit or an indictment of the starters, but regardless, I felt like this unit deserved a tip of the cap and a spot on this list. Martinas Rankin hadn’t played a snap all season, and Patrick Omameh is a recent signing. Yasir Durant played sparingly before Week 17 after both Mitch Schwartz and Mike Remmers was hurt.

Veterans Daniel Kilgore and Stefen Wisniewski had both started numerous games before, but that was still by far the least experienced line the Chiefs have played with all season. But I didn’t feel like it really showed. One of my biggest concerns going into the playoffs was the health of the offensive line. While that’s still a concern, this game made me feel a little better.

I’m especially excited about the possibility of Rankin providing an upgrade off the bench. I also think most of the line in this game at least has an opportunity to compete for a bigger role next season if they are back in K.C.

Next up, an offensive weapon that hasn’t had a role this season.
