Watkins (again) proves his worth

One unsung hero from Sunday’s win was wide receiver Sammy Watkins. In a game where we saw a few key blunders from Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman, it’s worth noting that Watkins made some crucial plays on some important drives. Watkins ended the day with a modest 4 catches for 60 yards, but a closer look shows that he had an understated, yet pivotal role in the Chiefs win. Consider Watkins’ contributions on two of the Chiefs’ touchdown drives.

These from the Chiefs second touchdown drive late in the first quarter:

  • 2nd & 18 at KC 26- Mahomes completes to Watkins for 10 yards.
  • 3rd and 8 at KC 36- Mahomes completes to Watkins for 23 yards.

Then from the Chiefs third touchdown drive:

  • 3rd and 5 at NO 41- Mahomes completes to Watkins for 20 yards

These three receptions perfectly encapsulate Watkins’ role as a Chief. From a macro view, he’s a trusty third-option in a stacked offense. But a deeper look at his contribution tells us he’s an integral weapon to this offense. These three catches alone are the difference between drives that stall or succeed. In turn, they can be the difference between winning and losing games.

Now, Mahomes’ theatrics on these conversions deserves a lion’s share of the credit, but when you consider the inconsistency of other receivers, Watkins’ ability to come down with the ball and convert in key situations becomes even more admirable. Expect Watkins to be a key feature of this offense come postseason time.
