Deshaun Watson says he’s heard good things about Eric Bieniemy.

The Houston Texans are doing their due diligence when it comes to figuring out the next group of leaders who will take charge of the franchise after Bill O’Brien‘s days at the helm, and Eric Bieniemy’s name is a common one heard from time to time with respect to the team’s head coach opening. In fact, their own interim coach was recently asked to comment on Bieniemy as well.

In recent days, Romeo Crennel, who is a former Kansas City Chiefs head coach spoke highly of Bieniemy’s future in the league and had both encouragement and advice for him to stay the course knowing that good things would come his way. However, he’s not the only member of the Texans discussing Bieniemy this week. The Chiefs offensive coordinator was also a subject of conversation for quarterback Deshaun Watson in a radio interview this week.

The ability to work with a known quarterback like Watson is going to be a major draw for any incoming head coaching candidate, but it sounds as if Watson is also positive about the potential to work with Bieniemy. When asked what he knew about him, he stated:

"“I haven’t spoken to Patrick about Eric,” Watson said. “But I’ve known about Eric from what I hear from guys that play on that team. He’s a great guy. He’s a fun guy to be around. Very creative. Everyone likes him. I haven’t heard anything bad. That’s pretty much it.”"

Bieniemy has been mentioned in conjunction with several head coaching opportunities in the last couple years thanks to being on Andy Reid’s staff as the Chiefs have become a model franchise over the last eight years. In that span, Bieniemy has gone from running backs coach to offensive coordinator, a post he’s held since Matt Nagy left before the 2018 season to take over the Chicago Bears.

The Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons are also teams with head coach openings who are expected to show some interest in Bieniemy, but others teams will likely soon join the fray—including the New York Jets who have the top pick in the draft as of now. While Bieniemy has been courted in years past, this sounds like the year he will finally get his chance and perhaps it will be with Watson and the Houston Texans.
