Ranking the biggest Chiefs vs. Raiders games in rivalry history
1969 Season – Conference Championship
After finishing with 12 wins the following season only to see their dreams for a championship evaporate at the hands of their hated rival, the Kansas City Chiefs entered the 1969 season with a vengeance. The road to redemption would be filled with some serious challenges.
Their leader and Chiefs all-time great Len Dawson succumbed to a leg injury part way through the season. Their backup Jackie Lee would suffer his own injury the following week, leaving the season’s hopes in the hands of second-year quarterback Mike Livingston.
Livingston delivered, leading the team on a dominant five-game winning streak in which the Chiefs would outscore opponents 138-62. Dawson eventually returned and the Chiefs finished the season with an impressive record of 11 wins and only three losses. After beating the defending champion New York Jets in the divisional round, the showdown of the decade loomed against the 12-1-1 Oakland Raiders.
Where the Chiefs failed the year before, they would not fail again. In the hostile environment of Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, a place where they were embarrassed a year prior, they regained their honor.
The offense didn’t have it’s best day, scoring only 17 points, but in the end it didn’t matter. The Chiefs defense, filled with legends of the red and gold, would hold the AFL’s top offense to only seven points.
Having downed their hated rival, the Chiefs went on to dominate the heavily favored NFL Vikings in the team’s first Super Bowl victory. The victory capped off a great season, and one of the greatest decades in franchise history.
