The AFC Quarterbacks

While football is certainly a team sport and ultimately you have to have a strong roster to make it far in the playoffs, no position has a greater impact than quarterback. We’ve already discussed how K.C.’s quarterback is arguably the biggest reason to believe in them. I think that advantage is especially big in the AFC.

There are certainly other good quarterbacks in the AFC, but my question is are there any quarterbacks that look like they will be in the AFC playoffs that can give Mahomes a run for his money? As of right now it looks like the other AFC quarterbacks in the playoffs will be some combination of Ben Roethlisberger, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Philip Rivers, Ryan Tannehill, Derek Carr, Baker Mayfield, and Tua Tagovailoa.

Now if fans of any of those teams read that I said they weren’t in Mahomes league, they’d probably throw a fit, but let’s be real for a minute. Jackson hasn’t been able to replicate his MVP season this year and there is at least some reason to question if he can win the biggest matchups with his track record. Roethlisberger is a two time Super Bowl winner and future Hall of Famer, but he’s 38 and while he’s still good I don’t think anyone would claim he hasn’t dropped off a little.

Allen is having his best season ever, but he hasn’t been able to win the big games against great teams thus far. Rivers has a tradition of falling apart when it matters. Tannehill and Carr are having great seasons, but still aren’t seen as guys that will carry a team on their back and Mayfield and Tagovailoa are still way too young and unproven to be mentioned in Mahomes’ league.

The Pittsburgh Steelers may still be the only undefeated team in the NFL, but the Chiefs are only one game behind them and I will argue with anyone that they have the clear advantage at quarterback. The fact of the matter is that the Chiefs are going to have the unquestioned advantage at quarterback in any AFC matchup they have throughout the playoffs. That’s a huge advantage and a good reason to view them as the favorite to make the Super Bowl.

So what about potential teams they would face in the Super Bowl?
