Patrick Mahomes was named the AFC’s Offensive Player of the Week.

On Wednesday, the NFL announced that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named the AFC’s Offensive Player of Week 8 on the regular season schedule. Mahomes earned the effort after lighting up the New York Jets defense for his single best statistical performance of the season.

Mahomes won the award for the first time this season back in Week 3, which means he’s won the award 25 percent of the year for all AFC offensive players—an incredible feat for the Chiefs QB.

During his stellar performance in Week 8, Mahomes threw a whopping five touchdown passes without throwing a single interception for 416 passing yards against a team that was the only winless team left in football. The Chiefs were widely expected to take care of business against the visiting Jets, and Andy Reid‘s team made it clear that they would not be overlooking any competition on their way to running it back.

So far this season, Mahomes has thrown 21 touchdown passes through 8 games with only 1 interception to his name.  He’s completed over 66 percent of his passes while throwing for over 2,300 yards and he leads the NFL with a QBR of 86.8. He’s also rushed for 2 more touchdowns.

On the season, Mahomes has placed himself squarely back in the NFL’s Most Valuable Player conversation along the likes of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russ Wilson, Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and more. What might help Mahomes at this point more than others in the race for MVP is the ease of K.C.’s schedule in the second half, with further games against the Falcons, Broncos, Raiders, Chargers, Dolphins, and Panthers.
