Mahomes heats up MVP race

Patrick Mahomes hasn’t put up crazy box score numbers over the past few weeks. He’s been outstanding, yes, but gawdy, obscene statistics appear to be the the price of admission for MVP consideration. And in week 8, Mahomes entered that conversation.

Against the Jets, Mahomes tossed 5 touchdowns, threw the ball with laser-like efficiency, and amassed over 400 yards passing on the day. He dizzied the Jets secondary with home-run throws to Tyreek Hill and Demarcus Robinson.

Now, it feels almost superficial to suddenly, after a glitzy game, anoint Mahomes as an MVP contender. He means a lot more to the Chiefs than his stat totals; his statistics don’t quite capture his value. The 2020 Chiefs, while reliant on Mahomes, aren’t quite as dependent as they were in the past two years.

Even so, Mahomes is putting together a superb season statistically. He has thrown for 21 scores to only 1 interception. He has 2,315 passing yards, and holds a season passer-rating of 115. While Russ Wilson has garnered talk as the MVP favorite, Mahomes is charging towards a stellar season in his own right, one which should garner serious consideration for the NFL MVP by season’s end.
