Jarrad Davis

While we said earlier that the Chiefs had plenty of talent already for a Super Bowl run, it doesn’t mean that K.C. doesn’t have problematic areas on the roster. Each contender has their issues and the Chiefs’ concerns are minor compared to other teams. However, Veach could choose to bolster the linebacking corps before the deadline if someone like Jarrad Davis were to draw his interest.

Jarrad Davis is another former first round pick who never worked out. The Detroit Lions had visions of a punishing presence in the heart of the defense, the sort of charismatic, courageous leader who would inspire those around him and become a franchise face on that side of the ball. Instead, Davis is likely to walk in free agency after the season with a forgettable four-year stint behind him in Detroit.

The Lions elected Davis as a captain this year, so there’s no questioning him as a fit in the locker room or on the field. Unfortunately he’s been tasked with too much from the beginning in Matt Patricia’s defense. He’s often looked overwhelmed in the middle, and the Lions were forced to actually demote him earlier this year. Now he plays a fraction of snaps as a versatile reserve placed in high-leverage situations for his skill set.

The Lions were once believers, but a deflating 20-point loss to the Colts in Week 8 likely helped stifle their expectations for a playoff push in 2020. If they’re selling, Davis could be a nice grab for the Chiefs for a half season of further linebacker depth and versatility. Davis has coverage skills with the burst to also get after the passer, and Steve Spagnuolo would love the ceiling he provides.

Proposed deal: Fifth round pick in 2021 for Davis
