Can the Chiefs defense rebound and limit the Bills offense?

Both teams did not look like themselves in their respective Week 5 matchups. Kansas City’s defense was not prepared for a more vertical attack from Derek Carr and the Raiders, which led to several big plays. Coverage breakdowns were consistent, and the pass rush could not put pressure on Carr despite the long-developing plays.

The Bills offense looked out of place compared to their first four games as well. Some of that could be due to the consistently changing of when or if the game was actually going to be played. Regardless, the offense made several mistakes, including Josh Allen, who had several lapses in judgment on passes. Given the injuries on Buffalo’s defense and their poor play so far in 2020, the Bills didn’t stand a chance against a team that was fired up and firing on all cylinders.

As Kansas City is expected to be amped up for this showdown to prove themselves to be better than last week’s performance, Buffalo will be as well. Breeland returned last week to provide more help on the boundary after several injuries, but Charvarius Ward had most likely the worst game of his career. It will be interesting to see if Ward gets back to being himself against the Bills on Monday night.

Rashad Fenton has been outstanding when called upon to this point. While he plays best on the boundary, he is more than capable of covering the slot. Tyrann Mathieu should play more roles throughout the defense if those three cornerbacks are playing well. The safeties playing over the top of the defense will have to be quick to make reads and not clear out the middle of the field due to the motions and route concepts that the Bills like to employ.

Kansas City will likely revert towards their production over the past year since their last loss. That doesn’t mean they will be lights out. Buffalo’s offense is a tough opponent, and they will most likely make several plays of their own. The most important defense aspect will be playing tight coverage over the middle in the intermediate and deep portions of the field.
