The Green Bay Packers have signed former Chiefs WR Kalija Lipscomb.

The Green Bay Packers have added a new wide receiver to their practice squad with the addition of former Kansas City Chiefs prospect Kalija Lipscomb, per Packers reporter Mike Clemens.

The Packers placed center Jake Henson on IR and freed up a spot to sign Lipscomb, who originally signed with the Chiefs after the 2020 NFL Draft but was unable to make the final roster when active roster cuts were due. From there, Lipscomb was re-signed to the Chiefs practice squad and remained there for the first month of the season. However he was released last week to make room for the signing of veteran wide receiver Chad Williams.

The Chiefs originally brought in both Lipscomb and Justice Shelton-Mosely, his former teammate at Vanderbilt, immediately after the draft as rookie free agents. The pair of wideouts helped round out an impressive haul of undrafted free agents hailed by draft analysts who believed the Chiefs had brought in some hidden gems to potentially make the team.

Unfortunately for both Shelton-Mosely and Lipscomb, neither player was able to make the active roster, but it’s hard to fault anyone given the depth of the position for the Chiefs at wide receiver as well as the lack of any normal preseason. Rookie minicamps were digital only. Offseason training activities were cancelled. No preseason games were allowed all summer.

Consequently, a player like Lipscomb had little opportunity, compared to other preseasons, in which he could earn the respect of a positional coach or even Andy Reid.

Lipscomb was given a healthy signing bonus to sign with the Chiefs after a senior season in which he posted career lows of 511 yards and 3 touchdowns. Vanderbilt’s offense had a rough season and the Chiefs still liked Lipscomb enough to try him out. Now he will get a new chance with the Packers in hopes of eventually making his way onto an NFL active roster.
