Defensive Player of the Quarter

Chris Jones has a very good case with 3.5 sacks but I think the secondary is where the Chiefs most valuable asset has been this season. There are multiple guys you could go with in the secondary that would make a good case for this award—between Juan Thornhill, Sneed, and Rashad Fenton—but it is Tyrann Mathieu who is the defensive MVP so far.

The Honey Badger is the unquestioned leader of the secondary and has been extremely vocal and passionate, somehow seemingly more so this year. When the Chiefs gave up garbage yards and points late to the Texans, it was Mathieu who was upset, despite the game being out of reach. He’s been putting big hits on opponents and looked really good in coverage. His impressive concentration allowed him a pick-6 and he’s had other opportunities as well, including one called back against the Patriots.

I think his performance is directly correlated to the improvement of the secondary considering Spags considers him another coach. Mathieu is not only the most valuable defensive player through the first 4 weeks, but someone who should be considered for the national defensive player of the year if he—and the Chiefs secondary—keeps this up.
