Tommy Townsend

Four games into the new era at the punter position for the Kansas City Chiefs, and undrafted rookie free agent Tommy Townsend has already set a franchise record, leading many fans to wonder: Dustin who?

On Monday night, Townsend saw a heavy workload as far as Chiefs punts are concerned, being summoned to boot the ball four times against the Patriots. In those four kicks, the rookie averaged 60.8 yards per kick.

Perhaps more impressively, as Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest notes, that average is the second highest in NFL history for punters kicking at least four times in a single game. That’s impressive.

It is fair to say that special teams coordinator Dave Toub and general manager Brett Veach knew precisely what they had in their new punter, and that made them feel very comfortable moving on from longtime punter and fan favorite Dustin Colquitt.
