The Patriots will be without Sony Michel when they visit the Chiefs on Monday.

The New England Patriots will be without running back Sony Michel on Monday night whenever they face the Kansas City Chiefs. The team announced the news on Monday morning as they prepared to fly to K.C. for their postponed Week 4 contest.

Michel has been limited in practice this entire week with a quad injury that left him designated as questionable leading up to the initial weekend. However, even with an extra day to rest, the Patriots were still not able to get Michel close to healthy. That’s a big loss for an offense that’s already operating at a deficit.

On Saturday, the Patriots leaned that starting quarterback Cam Newton had tested positive for COVID-19. That immediately meant that Brian Hoyer or Jarrett Stidham would be the team’s new starting quarterback against the Chiefs. The game was postponed a single day as teams were able to be cleared without any further cases, leaving the Pats with a Patrick Mahomes vs. Hoyer showdown.

Last week, Michel had a breakout game with 9 carries for 117 yards as well as 2 catches for 23 more yards through the air in the team’s win over the Las Vegas Raiders. On the year, Michel has 26 carries for 173 yards and a 1 single touchdown.

The Patriots will now turn to Rex Burkhead, J.J. Taylor and James White to compensate in the backfield, but Bill Belichick’s team is now without its two top rushers on the year so far in Newton and Michel. Burkhead has 83 yards and 2 touchdowns on 19 carries. Taylor has 70 yards on 16 carries on the year.
