With an injury filled Week 2 finally over, the Chiefs are tied with the Raiders atop the AFC West. Here’s a look at the full NFL standings.
Week 2 was one many NFL fans want to forget—not necessarily because their team lost, but because of the devastating injuries. Not even a full half into the first games of the day, the league was quickly becoming decimated.
The San Francisco 49ers seemed to have the worst luck, losing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a high ankle sprain, running back Raheem Mostert to a sprained MCL, defensive end Nick Bosa to a torn ACL, and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas to a torn ACL.
Other big names include New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, who tore his ACL, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, who suffered a high ankle sprain, and Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams, who suffered a hamstring injury.
In the AFC West, the Denver Broncos had a rough week as well with quarterback Drew Lock suffering a sprained AC joint and wide receiver Courtland Sutton suffering a torn ACL. These injuries ultimately were a major factor in the Broncos’ loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Backup quarterback Jeff Driskel came in for the Broncos to replace Lock and put up a respectable stat line as he completed 18 of 34 attempts for 256 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. The Steelers struggled to put the Broncos away late, but ended up winning 26-21.
The Kansas City Chiefs were not immune to the injuries of Week 2, but were fortunate in comparison to other teams. Their most notable injuries were to wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who took a helmet to helmet hit and never returned to the game, and backup running back Darrel Williams, who suffered an ankle injury.
The Chiefs had an awful game, but managed to just sneak away from the division rival Los Angeles Chargers. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes led the team to another double digit comeback in an effort where he completed 27 of 47 passes for 302 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also rushed 6 times for 54 yards.
But the real hero of the game was kicker Harrison Butker, who hit three field goals: one from 30-yards and two from 58-yards, including the game winner. The Chiefs ultimately won the game 23-20 in overtime.
The Chargers ended up starting rookie quarterback Justin Herbert last minute in place of quarterback Tyrod Taylor due to an aggravated injury. Herbert made a couple mistakes, which were extremely costly but expected from a rookie. He completed 22 of 33 passes for 311 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.
The Las Vegas Raiders secured a win on Monday night against the New Orleans Saints to tie the Chiefs atop the AFC West. Raiders quarterback Derek Carr completed 28 of 38 passes for 282 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tight end Darren Waller led the Raiders receivers by far with 12 receptions for 103 yards and 1 touchdown. The Raiders ultimately won the game 34-24.
