Chiefs rookie review: L’Jarius Sneed stands out in Week 2
By Scott Loring
An impressive showing
4th round corner L’Jarius Sneed is one of the biggest surprises in the league. Tasked with defending LA wideout Keenan Allen, Sneed followed up his dazzling debut with another very good performance in Week 2 , including a sensational interception that was the turning point of the ball game.
In the waning moments of the 3rd quarter, the Chargers led 17-9 and had possession at the Chiefs’ 39-yard-line with a short 2nd-and-2. Herbert scrambled left and looked deep over the middle for Allen. Sneed closed the gap, played the ball beautifully and made an acrobatic interception. After two weeks, he is the only NFL player with more than one interception.
Fifth round defensive end Mike Danna continues to show remarkable savvy for a rookie selected on day three. Against the Chargers, Danna played 40 snaps, sacked Herbert once, and gave the Chiefs valuable reps in a game in which the team played without their top two starting defensive ends.
Undrafted free agent Tershawn Wharton also shined again, playing 25 snaps and provided a solid push in the middle of the Chiefs defense. Without Mike Pennel and Khalen Saunders for the last two games, the rookie from Missouri S&T has made the most of his opportunity.
Punter Tommy Townsend is here to stay. Many were unsure about the team’s decision to save money at the position by letting go of veteran Dustin Colquitt, but Townsend has performed like a veteran. He’s averaged 44.2 yards on five punts, including a 55-yarder. It also should not go unnoticed that Townsend executed perfect holds on field goals, including the clutch 58-yarder in overtime to win.
