With the news of his engagement on Tuesday night, it’s crystal clear that Patrick Mahomes is having himself an incredible year. Let’s dive into some of his accomplishments in 2020.

To borrow a term from Larry David, Patrick Mahomes is having a pretty good 2020. Pretty, pretty, pretty good, in fact, it’s pretty staggering to consider just how much the cannon-armed kid from Tyler, Texas has accomplished. Add that to the fact that 2020 has been an objectively brutal year, and Mahomes’ 2020 seems almost mythical.

Mahomes’ 2020 started off with his quest to lead the Kansas City Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory, the team’s first since 1970. He pulled off, in my opinion, one of the most dominant performances recent memory in the AFC Divisional game vs Houston, wiling the Chiefs to a win despite an early 24-0 deficit.

Next came the AFC championship, where Mahomes pulled off one of the best plays in Chiefs history: a heroic 27-yard scramble where he pinballed off a couple of defenders and fell into the end zone. After that, the rest was history.

Then came the Super Bowl. I can capture the greatness of that performance in one word: Wasp. Wasp, of course, refers to the exquisite, game-saving completion Mahomes made to Tyreek Hill in the 4th quarter of Super Bowl LIV. Mahomes struggled early but delivered when it counted, turning on his juggernaut switch and leading an improbable, nay, highly improbable, victory over San Francisco. Mahomes deservedly earned the Super Bowl MVP for his performance.

Up to this point, all the 24-year-old has done is win a Super Bowl, earn a Super Bowl MVP, and deliver some of the most iconic plays in Chiefs history in the span of three games: the scramble vs. Tennesse and Wasp in the Super Bowl. A meager feat, I know.

Mahomes’ 2020 was just getting started. Early this summer, Mahomes signed a record-breaking 10-year contract worth up to 503 million dollars– the most lucrative deal in the history of professional sports. There are few better feelings than when your direct deposit goes through, but I reckon signing a deal of that size is a different kind of exhilaration.

Mahomes was far from idle after signing the deal. He quickly moved to become a member of the ownership group for the Kansas City Royals. And to top it all off, it was announced on Tuesday night that Patrick had become engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Brittany Matthews.

In a year that can best be described as “challenging”, it would be easy to fall envious of Mahomes’ success. But we should avoid that trap. Patrick Mahomes has delivered Chiefs Kingdom immeasurable joy.  Part of this comes from the Super Bowl, and the tremendous performances, but a lot of our admiration for Patrick stems from his character, already evident at the young age of 24.

So, 2020 has been rough for all of us. We are all looking for those glimpses of light, rare as they may seem. Well here’s one: Patrick Mahomes will be a Chief for at least the next decade. The memories are just beginning. His incredible 2020, stocked with professional and personal brilliance, are the fuel for what will be a truly unforgettable career.

Congrats to Patrick and Brittany!
