Patrick Mahomes leads 2020 AFC quarterback power rankings
6. Derek Carr
I know what you’re thinking, I’m drunk right? Derek Carr as the sixth best quarterback in the AFC? I clearly don’t know what in the world I’m talking about. That’s what is so crazy about the AFC quarterback pool. I think Derek Carr is closer in talent to Sam Darnold (my 16th ranked QB) than he is any of the top three QBs on this list. That’s how big the drop off is after the top 3-4 guys.
So why is he ahead of some of these other guys? Well, frankly his numbers surprisingly validate it. Carr completed 70% of his passes while still averaging 7.9 yards per attempt which was in the top five for YPA for returning AFC starters. His 21 to 8 touchdown to interception ratio was respectable and his QB rating, QBR, and PFF grade were all higher than almost all the guys below him on this list.
The Raiders added more weapons for Carr this offseason too. I may not like Derek Carr. I may be really glad he isn’t my team’s quarterback, but the reality is that he played better than most of the other non-elite AFC quarterbacks last season. That bar just isn’t very high.
