Patrick Mahomes leads 2020 AFC quarterback power rankings
7. Cam Newton
Like Josh Allen, I would have never thought that I’d rank Newton this high. As of writing this, he hasn’t even been officially named the starter for the New England Patriots, but I think that is just a formality at this point. Obviously, Newton has to show he can stay healthy, that is really his biggest obstacle to being one of the better quarterbacks in the AFC. Newton’s image as a star QB has taken a hit since his Super Bowl loss a few years back, but he still has big time talent.
Newton missed most of last season, but when he started in 2018, his production was better than the vast majority of guys on this list. That year, he completed 67.4% of his passes with 24 touchdowns to 13 interceptions while rushing for close to 500 yards. With the current shortage of great QBs in the AFC, Newton could easily put himself ahead of most of the pack if he can get back to that level of play this year. The Patriots coaching staff will put Newton in a position to succeed, so if he stays healthy, I think he’ll earn this spot.
