Alex Smith has completed his comeback after being cleared for all football activities.

If you’re looking for some good news this morning, Alex Smith has you covered. The former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and civic hero has completed the most unlikely of comebacks with word that he’s been cleared for all football activities by the Washington Football Team’s medical staff.

Washington will activate Smith off of their Physical Unable to Perform list on Sunday, per reporter Ben Standig, which means that Smith’s excruciating journey back to the field will be complete. He’s officially going to be able to compete like any other quarterback in training camp for the chance to start in Washington—the very role for which he was acquired by Washington back in 2018.

The Smith family had something to celebrate when they found out the news.

The video posted by Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, is made all the more exciting when reflecting back on the horrific injury suffered by Smith in the fall of 2018 when Smith went down with a spiral, compound fracture of his leg. The injury was believed to be career-threatening for quite some time, and Smith even battled for his life—and at least his leg—after dealing with sepsis following numerous surgeries to fix the break.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Smith to Washington shortly before the Super Bowl in January, 2018. The move brought back a third round pick and cornerback Kendall Fuller to K.C. The move cleared the way for Patrick Mahomes to become the team’s starter and provided Smith with a new place in which to extend his career as a starter after signing a lucrative four-year extension after the trade.

Smith was 6-4 in his first 10 starts in Washington with 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. The team lost five of their last six games after Smith went down with an injury in 2018 and finished with a miserable record of 3-13 without him entirely in 2019. Now under a new head coach in Ron Rivera, it will be interesting to see if Smith can win over a new regime and return to his place as the team’s starter. Either way, the comeback is already complete and it’s inspiring to us all.
