The Kansas City Chiefs could lose a ton of free agents in 2021

Defensive Backs

1. Charvarius Ward
2. Bashaud Breeland
3. Daniel Sorensen
4. Antonio Hamilton
5. Tedric Thompson
6. Alex Brown

The defensive backs (specifically cornerbacks) may be the area of most concern on the roster. Cornerback isn’t considered a strength of the defense now and the Chiefs could potentially lose both of their starting cornerbacks to free agency after this season.

I find it highly unlikely that Bashaud Breeland will be back after this season. In addition, Ward will be a restricted free agent, which means the Chiefs retain the rights to sign him but he’ll be quite a bit more expensive. The Chiefs could also work out a long-term deal, but that will require some more magic from Veach given the number of current extensions in place against a tight cap.

The safety position will be fine with Tyrann Mathieu, Juan Thornhill, and Armani Watts all still under contract in 2021. The loss of depth may be noticed, especially on special teams, but the Chiefs can survive there. As far as cornerback goes, the Chiefs will need their recent draft picks (Rashad Fenton, L’Jarius Sneed, and BoPete Keyes) to really step up and prove they can be key players if they are going to make this work. Re-signing Ward would obviously be the goal, but he could potentially be the biggest casualty of the salary cap wall if things take a “worst case scenario” turn next offseason.

There you have it: 25 players that cover every position group on the roster that are set to be free agents after the coming season. Nobody knows exactly how this season will play out and what the cap will look like in 2021, but the Chiefs could have some really hard decisions to make. Keep all of this in mind in the coming weeks as the Chiefs finalize their 2020 roster, especially if one of the players listed here loses his spot to a guy that the Chiefs can keep around cheap next season. While the Chiefs may be in “Run It Back” mode this year as they attempt to win back to back Super Bowls, Brett Veach has to already be planning how he will navigate a very tricky offseason a year from now.

What do you think Chiefs fans? Do you agree that it could be very difficult to fill out the roster next season with all these pending free agents and what looks like a bad cap situation next year or are you convinced Brett Veach can pull off some more magic like he did when he extended Patrick Mahomes and Chris Jones? I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments below.
