Former Chiefs safety Jordan Lucas has opted out of 2020 season.
According to NFL reporter Tom Pelissero, Chicago Bears safety Jordan Lucas has decided to opt out of the upcoming NFL season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lucas, who recently turned 27 years old, is a four-year veteran of the NFL who has played the last two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. He signed a one-year contract worth $1 million earlier this offseason in March.
While the news isn’t a huge blow to the Bears roster, it’s still something else for general manager Ryan Pace to address. Lucas was unlikely to get much playing time in the Bears secondary but he’s a solid special teams piece who can play in all four facets.
Lucas joined the Chiefs in a trade made by GM Brett Veach that sent a seventh round pick to Miami for Lucas shortly before active rosters were due for the 2018 season. Lucas would make his only career starts that season—four of them—for Bob Sutton’s defense, and he would go on to put up 32 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception and 2 batted passes.
In 2019, the Chiefs remade the safety position and rid themselves of the question marks surrounding star Eric Berry. The Chiefs also moved on from Ron Parker. They brought in Juan Thornhill and Tyrann Mathieu after drafting Armani Watts in 2018 and, consequently, Lucas played in 14 games for the Chiefs but put up 7 tackles in a special teams only role.
Lucas entered the NFL as the sixth round pick of the Miami Dolphins back in the 2016 NFL Draft as a versatile prospect out of Penn State.
