The Chiefs waived safety Andrew Soroh to bring their roster down to 80.
The Kansas City Chiefs swapped a pair of safeties to bring their roster to an official total of 80 that included the newly signed Tedric Thompson. In order to make room for the free agent veteran, the Chiefs released defensive back Andrew Soroh.
Soroh is a big defensive back from Florida Atlantic who originally signed with the Chiefs in 2019 after impressing the team’s coaching staff during rookie minicamp. The 6’0″ safety, who also played reps at linebacker in college, had 52 tackles, 4.5 of them for a loss, and 1.5 sacks in his final season for the Owls.
Soroh spent the early part of this offseason in the XFL with the XXXX, where he had 20 tackles and 1 interception. After the league folded, general manager Brett Veach eventually reached back out to Soroh to re-sign him for the upcoming season. However, the addition of Thompson made the roster too crowded at the position.
Soroh is likely to remain on Veach’s radar if injuries or COVID-19 becomes an issue at the position. It’s clear the team wants to keep tabs on him. That said, the Chiefs opted for the starting experience and special teams prowess of Thompson instead.
The Chiefs signed Thompson earlier this week. The former Seattle Seahawks safety has a bit of starting experience, but is best used as a depth piece who excels on special teams.
The Chiefs have Juan Thornhill and Tyrann Mathieu as their starting safeties with Dan Sorensen and Armani Watts also in the rotation for reps in the secondary. Chris Lammons and Rodney Clemons remain interesting young players still on the roster as well.
