Darryl Williams

Apparently this short offseason is really not good for guys named Darryl Williams.

Much like the running back with almost the same name, I think this Williams has the talent to stick around but could find himself crowded out by veteran numbers. I’m not a huge fan of starting center Austin Reiter, but with the Chiefs in “run it back” mode, he’s pretty much a lock to be the starter again this season. However, I think there is definitely a place for Williams as a possible long-term replacement.

Unfortunately for Williams, I think his best chance as an undrafted free agent may be to develop for a year on the practice squad. The Chiefs already have seven guys who can play along the interior offensive line in Andrew Wylie, Kelechi Osemele, Martinas Rankin, Mike Remmers, Nick Allegretti, Lucas Niang, and Austin Reiter. Wylie, Osemele, Rankin, Remmers, and Reiter all have starting NFL experience. Allegretti and Niang are recent draft picks. All of them have a clearer path to playing time than Williams.

I like Williams enough that I think it was possible for him to go out and prove that he’s better than someone like Allegretti. However, with so little time to learn the offense and no games in which he could prove himself, I think it’s probably the practice squad for him this season. Then maybe he can make a real move at center in 2021.

Next up, an odd man out on the defensive front.
