Patrick Mahomes’ dreams of bringing a Whataburger franchise to the Kansas City region could come true

Is there anything that Patrick Mahomes cannot do?

As the most popular player in America’s most popular sport, Mahomes is likely growing accustomed to things going his way most of the time, but listening to a Whataburger representative at present, it’s clear the influence of the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback extends to corporations as well.

It was nearly two years ago that Mahomes expressed a desire for more than just the store’s regionally famous ketchup. The former MVP stated he wanted the franchise to expand into the K.C. area.

Recently the restaurant chain released a statement regarding Mahomes’ dreams for a location in the K.C. area:

"“We are excited to hear we have so many fans in the Kansas City community, and we have been exploring this area. At this time, we have no specific plans to announce a restaurant but will be happy to share when — and if — the time is right.”"

However, according to the Kansas City Star, the city of Lee’s Summit has already drawn up site plans for a potential location and have met with representatives from Whataburger as well. The news from Lee’s Summit indicates some level of movement, but Whataburger clearly isn’t ready to cement those plans just yet.

As a native Texan, it’s natural for the Chiefs star quarterback to be enamored with Whataburger. The San Antonio-based franchise has nearly 700 locations in Texas alone and plenty more in the nation’s most southern states, including Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and Arkansas. The franchise has also ventured west into New Mexico and Arizona and crept north a bit to Oklahoma. However, that’s where the reach ends.

Mahomes, last year’s Super Bowl MVP, is heading into his third full season as the Chiefs starting quarterback. In that span, he’s 24-7 with 76 career touchdown passes and only 18 interceptions.
