Chiefs head coach Andy Reid was honored at the 2020 ESPY Awards.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid lacked only one thing in his coaching career. He’d piled up the wins. He’d proven himself to be a favorite for players of any temperament or position. He’d mentored plenty of successful other leaders who came after him. He’d embodied a model of sustained success.

The one thing he did not have was that elusive Super Bowl victory. Fortunately for both Reid and Chiefs Kingdom, that win came last winter after 21 years as a head coach.

On Sunday, the 2020 ESPY Awards were held in the wake of the coronavirus with a renewed theme of civic or social impact instead of sporting achievements. Previous categories like Best Female Athlete or Best Upset Win or Best NFL Player were sidelined as new ones emerged such as the Arthur Ashe Courage Award or the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award. And at one special point in the ceremony, they paid tribute to Andy Reid,

Check out the following montage they played to celebrate the Chiefs win and Reid’s first ever Super Bowl victory:

Given Reid’s two decade history of being unable to win the big game, the head coach had drawn the ire of some fans in both Philadelphia, where he used to coach the Eagles, and Kansas City. The belief was that he was an excellent coach to bring a team to the level of playoff contender. But after watching younger coaches like Sean McVay or Doug Pedersen, even, raise the Lombardi Trophy, some fans wanted to replace Reid in much the same way that Patrick Mahomes took over for Alex Smith. Those doubters are now sitting quietly at home.

Several Chiefs players took to Twitter to shout out to their favorite coach:

Reid’s career record is 207-128-1 in the regular season and 15-14 in the playoffs.
