#7: Quarterbacks – Chiefs quarterbacks feature the NFL’s best and some strong individual seasons

From the inception of this project, it felt obvious that the position group of quarterback was amongst the weakest in franchise history. In fact, it felt inevitable that it would be ranked the weakest.

And it would be, except for the number of individual seasons by a multitude of different quarterbacks which have merited Pro Bowl honors. No, this group is not littered with Hall of Fame talent – but it has been buoyed by a remarkable number of strong seasons.

The Chiefs have had 11 different quarterbacks make the Pro Bowl which feels…remarkable. In fact, they’ve done so 21 times – which means that in more than one third of all franchise seasons, they’ve fielded one of the top quarterbacks in the league. Those quarterbacks have included the obvious: Len Dawson and Patrick Mahomes – without a doubt the best two signal callers in the team’s history.

But, the group has also included: Trent Green, Alex Smith, Joe Montana, Cotton Davidson, Bill Kenney, Matt Cassel (made the Pro Bowl?), Elvis Grbac, Steve Bono and Mike Livingston. While none of these players has ever been named a 1st Team All-Pro quarterback while in Kansas City, what is obvious is that each has put together solid seasons for the Chiefs. In fact, Alex Smith made three Pro Bowls and Trent Green made two, during their tenures here.

Nonetheless, despite their 21 combined Pro Bowls, the lack of elite level talent here holds the position group down in our all-time rankings. If Patrick Mahomes has the career that we all hope he has – the group likely moves up by virtue of fielding one of the all-time greats. But right now, it stands as one of the weaker position groups in the team’s history.
