Best late round draft picks in Kansas City Chiefs history
3. Kevin Ross, Cornerback
The seventh round of the 1984 NFL Draft saw the Chiefs take defensive back Kevin Ross. Ross played in Kansas City for 10 years, then spent three years away in Atlanta and San Diego, before playing his final season and retiring as a Chief in 1997, after 14 years in the league.
The former Temple Owl was named to the NFL’s 1984 All-Rookie Team after getting six interceptions at cornerback during his inaugural campaign. He played corner most of his career, but flipped to safety in 1993 and played his final five seasons at that position. He was twice named to the AFC’s Pro Bowl roster, in 1989 and 1990. He played in 56 games during his 11 years with the Chiefs.
Ross finished his Chiefs career with 30 interceptions, which ranks seventh all time in club history. He also amassed 827 career tackles in Kansas City, which places him in the top 10 all time in franchise history. He also ranks fourth all time in Chiefs history for non-offensive touchdowns (6), but is second on the list amongst defensive players behind Hall of Famer Bobby Bell (9). The others ahead of him on the list are return specialists Dante Hall (12) and Tamarick Vanover (8).
Ross is also featured on our All-Time 55 man roster, as are the final two names on our countdown. A superb talent in the defensive backfield, there is no doubt that Ross is one of the best corners in team history, and one of the best late round picks ever for the club as well.
