4. Jerrel Wilson, Punter

The eleventh round of the 1963 AFL Draft saw the Kansas City Chiefs select punter, Jerrel Wilson from Southern Miss. Wilson was a 17th round selection in the NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams, but chose to play in Kansas City instead. During his career, he was named to the Pro Bowl three times. Wilson played in 203 of 210 regular season contests during his fifteen year Chiefs’ career.

Wilson led the NFL in punting four times during his 16 year NFL career including leading the league in average twice, in 1972 and 1973. For his efforts, Wilson is named to All-Decade teams for both the 1960’s and the 1970’s, which is a truly incredible feat. He is the 1st Team punter member of the AFL Hall of Fame’s All-1960’s squad; and is also the 2nd Team punter for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s All-1970’s Team. He retired from the NFL with a career 43 yards per punt average, which is one of the top 60 averages in the history of the league.

Comparing the side-by-side careers of Wilson and fellow-former Chiefs punter Dustin Colquitt is almost like looking in the mirror – two punters who each played 15 years as Chiefs and were both consistent, quality players for the franchise. It is debatable which one had the better overall career in Kansas City, but what is not debatable is that Wilson is one of the best late round draft picks in Kansas City history.
