Which 2020 additions could have the biggest impact?

Given the pandemic and cap situation in Kansas City, there hasn’t been the same type of players being brought in via free agency. The Chiefs spent the offseason bringing back players from their Super Bowl season including Demarcus Robinson, Bashaud Breeland, and Mike Pennel. If there is a big impact from a player that joined the Chiefs in 2020, it would likely come from the draft.

Running back, Clyde Edwards-Helaire could be someone that could provide that impact. Since the release of Kareem Hunt, the Chiefs have struggled to hold a consistent run game. Of course, with Patrick Mahomes and the receiving weapons that Kansas City possesses, the run game isn’t nearly as important. However, no one can argue the difference that Hunt made within the offense, both as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield.

Edwards-Helaire is a significant upgrade at running back. Coming out of LSU, he has experience lining up all over the offense as Hunt did for the Chiefs. Unlike the rest of the running backs on the roster, he has a unique talent for making yardage and avoiding tackles when he is met in the backfield. Adding him to Andy Reid‘s offense will give defensive coordinators nightmares.

Willie Gay Jr. is another name that comes to mind. The Chiefs have lacked a three-down linebacker who can work sideline to sideline with the athleticism and intelligence to play in coverage since Derrick Johnson left. Gay will allow Spagnuolo to move Damien Wilson back to the SAM position where he is best suited. There will be some development needed, but his upside is massive.

L’Jarius Sneed is the third name that comes to mind. Sneed will likely move back to cornerback for Kansas City after converting to a safety role in his final season at Louisiana Tech. With elite speed and physical play style at the line of scrimmage, Sneed could find himself contributing early. As it stands right now, the Chiefs are one injury or suspension away from having to start the rookie cornerback.
