The Kansas City Chiefs will start negotiations with Patrick Mahomes this summer.

Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt recently spoke with Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan on Wednesday and gave listeners an update on when negotiations should begin for Patrick Mahomes on a shiny new contract extension.

Hunt spoke glowingly about the team’s brilliant young quarterback and the whole interview is worth a read. However, for our purposes, the most important aspects can be found in these words from Hunt when asked about Mahomes’ expected big money deal.

"“The negotiations are something we’ll be getting into this summer,” Hunt said on a Facebook Live event with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “But what he has said and what we’ve said, both sides is, he wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that’s our mentality as well. We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that’s what we’re going to be shooting for.”"

Mahomes is expected to set new records in terms of NFL finances in every aspect of his new deal. The extension given to Mahomes is expected to surpass the numbers of Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks by quite a bit and could even eclipse the $40 million per year mark. It will be interesting how long the Chiefs will commit in terms of length and what percent of the salary cap Mahomes will be allowed to take up.

No matter the numbers involved, Mahomes deserves every penny. In just two years as a starter, he’s delivered a Super Bowl win and had the team on the verge of another appearance. He’s won the Super Bowl MVP award and a regular season MVP, and he’s the most popular player in the entire sport. Not only is he a dream for the Chiefs on the field, but he’s a model citizen and charismatic leader who has somehow kept his head despite such a meteoric rise.
