Alex Smith, Derrick Johnson among Chiefs who deserve Super Bowl ring
Will Shields
In the third round of the 1993 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Will Shields, a guard from Nebraska. Shields went on to play in all 224 regular season games during his illustrious 14-year NFL career (starting 223 of them, all but his first).
Shields made the Pro Bowl in twelve consecutive seasons before retiring after the 2006 season. He was also a two time 1st Team All-Pro selection, and he was the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2003 for his efforts in the community. For his commitment, he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2015. In a field of competitors littered with talent and accolades, Shields is the best third round pick in the history of the Chiefs.
While that alone does not merit his inclusion on the list of those receiving a Super Bowl ring, the fact that he is a lifelong Chief does. Since his retirement, he has continued to be active in the Kansas City community, including opening and operating his business (a string of gyms) in the metro area. Shields has also remained active with the Chiefs organization by participating in Ambassador events and activities, and volunteering to help children in the area in numerous capacities.
Due to his commitment to this team and their city, coupled with his Hall of Fame legacy, Shields has earned the honor of a Super Bowl ring.
