The staff and roster consistency should be an advantage

This is a subjective argument, but given the volatility of the 2020 offseason and NFL teams’ inability to implement their offseason plans as they normally would, a seasoned roster like that of the Chiefs should have a leg up on the average competition across the league.

Teams with younger or newer players who will be heavily relied upon in 2020 will undoubtedly have a steeper learning curve due to effects of shelter in place orders. This situation sounds like virtually every single team in the AFC West. The Chargers will have a new starting quarterback, the Broncos will have a number of new players to integrate on both offense and defense and the Raiders might not even know who their starting quarterback will be next season.

Most of the Chiefs non-division games are against teams with similar circumstances. However, there will be some formidable challengers to the pursuit of a perfect season. The biggest three games that could get in the way are all on the road against the Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

All three of these games are against franchises who possess the same traits of consistency as the Chiefs, and they will undoubtedly be up to give the reigning champions their best shot. These will be tough contests, without a doubt, but I could see the Chiefs being favored in all three of them.

Conclusion

The Chiefs will have a bullseye on their backs heading into 2020. As the reigning Super Bowl champions, they’re assured to get every single team’s best shot. For some, playing the Chiefs will be their most anticipated game of the season.

All of that said, the Chiefs offense and defense should see marginal to marked improvement in 2020. We haven’t even talked about the overall health of the team, the beefed up offensive line, or the development of certain players along the defensive line.

If the Chiefs can handle their business against the three Super Bowl contenders listed above, I’m not sure they lose another game on their schedule. Ultimately, 2020 could be even more historic for the franchise and the NFL than 2019.
