The Chiefs five most intriguing undrafted free agent signings
By Jalon Dodson
Tommy Townsend, P, Florida
A punter as an interesting signing, really? Yeah, that’s pretty crazy, but what’s also crazy is that the Chiefs have three punters on the roster right now—including Townsend. Dustin Colquitt, who is the Chiefs’ veteran punter since 2005, may have a battle for his position for the first time in pretty much ever.
According to PFF, Townsend earned a punting grade of 81.7 in 2019, and has 41.0 net yards per punt in his career with 54 punts landing inside the 20. In no way, shape or form is this a comparison between the two, but Colquitt’s net average is 39.9. Colquitt has been and will be one of the greatest punters in Chiefs history, but with that accolade comes the downside: age. Townsend would be the perfect heir to Colquitt, and not just because of his hair, which may just be among the best in the draft.

Whether there’s an actual battle ahead of the three punters for the Chiefs, which also includes Tyler Newsome, remains to be seen. However, Colquitt could use a break as he nears age 38. It’s also fairly interesting to mention that Townsend and Colquitt have the same punting average of 44.8 (gross punt average), although this is Townsend’s collegiate average compared to Colquitt’s professional average.
If the Chiefs feel like they need to move on from Colquitt or have a mututal agreement resulting in his retirement, Townsend would make for a great choice for the future.
