Round one is in the books and the Chiefs will be on the clock for more selections on Friday evening. Who are the best players left for KC on day two?

The Kansa City Chiefs are scheduled to make two selections on the second day of the 2020 NFL Draft. Their first pick is in the second round at No. 63 (via the San Francisco 49ers in the Dee Ford trade) and the second selection is in the third round at No.  96.

The Chiefs do not own their original second round selection (No. 64), as it was part of the Frank Clark trade in 2019. In addition, the team was awarded no compensatory picks in 2020.

The Chiefs have already addressed an area most thought they would in the first round of the draft with the selection of Clyde Edwards-Helaire, a running back from LSU. In the next two rounds, Kansas City should be able to continue to build depth as they prepare for significant free agent departures after the 2020 season. This is a very deep draft according to experts, so Chiefs fans should be excited about the players the team will select moving forward.

Based on presumptive needs, who are the best players remaining at each position for the Kansas City Chiefs after day one of the draft?

Wide Receiver

The talent at wideout continues to run deep into the second and third rounds. Familiar names from mock drafts are still widely available, from Colorado’s Laviska Shenault to Clemson’s Tee Higgins. Other names to watch include Denzel Mims (Baylor), Michael Pittman (USC), K.J. Hamler (Penn State), and Bryan Edwards (South Carolina). In addition it should be noted that not a single tight end has been taken either.

Interior Offensive Line

If the Chiefs are going to look for a guard or center with the 63rd pick in the draft, they should consider looking at LSU prospects like Damien Lewis or Lloyd Cushenberry or even Robert Hunt from Louisiana-Lafayette. Or, they could consider a center, someone like Matt Hennessy from Temple may be an option here.

Offensive Tackle

If the Chiefs look to build depth at tackle in the second or third round, as they may have to replace a tackle in the next year or two, they may target someone like Lucas Niang from TCU, Ezra Cleveland of Boise State, or Josh Jones from Houston if he’s still around.

Defensive Tackle

It’s hard to believe names like Ross Blacklock or Neville Gallimore will last until the Chiefs pick again. However at defensive tackle, the Chiefs may have a couple of excellent options in the third round with players like Alabama’s Raekwon Davis or Ohio State’s Davon Hamilton still available.

Edge Rusher

There are some great edge rushers on the board now (A.J. Epenesa, Zack Baun, Yetur Gross-Matos), but unfortunately none are likely to be available the next time the Chiefs go on the clock. But, if they are looking for a target, Darrell Taylor from Tennessee or Curtis Weaver from Boise State are under-the-radar guys who can make it to the back of the second.

Inside Linebacker

The Chiefs missed out on Patrick Queen by four selections. Instead, they’ll have some options at No. 63 like Willie Gay Jr. from Mississippi State or, at No. 96, someone like Jordan Mack from Virginia.

Cornerback

The depth at cornerback is excellent heading in to the second round and I would expect this to be the place where the Chiefs target their 63rd pick. Corners like Cam Dantzler from Mississippi State, Troy Pride from Notre Dame, or Bryce Hall from Virginia could all get to the end of the second round for the Chiefs.

Safety

If the Chiefs want to add another excellent safety to the mix with Daniel Sorensen’s contract up next spring, Xavier McKinney, Jeremy Chinn, Antoine Winfield Jr., and Grant Delpit are all still available.

Tune in on Friday for continued Chiefs draft coverage. Round two begins at 6 p.m. Arrowhead Time.
