In a pre-draft Zoom session with the media, Brett Veach praised the offensive linemen and receivers in the draft class. Could K.C. nab yet another receiver early?

The Kansas City Chiefs are entering the 2020 NFL Draft as the Super Bowl champions and general manager Brett Veach made it clear that they want to sustain that success for years to come. When asked about the positions that he was impressed by in a recent conference call with reporters, he specifically mentioned the depth at wide receiver and offensive line.

General managers are known for throwing around smokescreens right before the draft. However, with the 32nd overall pick, the Chiefs have very little to hide. With the draft filled to the brim with talented wide receivers, could Veach be planning to further the team’s embarrassment of riches at the position?

It is interesting to note the emphasis that Veach put on “drafting for the future.” While bringing back the gang to run it back, Veach is also planning on building a roster that will be good for the rest of Patrick Mahomes‘s (long) career. At first glance, the Chiefs have several positions that are held by players on one-year deals.  The only running back with multiple years on their contract is Darwin Thompson. At cornerback, Charvarius Ward and Reshad Fenton are the only players under contract into 2021.

At wide receiver, Tyreek Hill just signed an extension and Mecole Hardman was drafted last season, but they are the only two wide receivers on the active roster beyond this season. While there are a ton of scenarios that are possible for the Chiefs in the draft, one that cannot be overlooked is the Chiefs taking another wide receiver at the top of their draft board.

Anyone who pays attention to the draft knows that this class is full of talent at wideout. Veach saying as much is not necessarily surprising. What is intriguing is the fact that the Chiefs will have two receivers under contract after this season. Sammy Watkins restructured his contract to stay with the Chiefs and it seems unlikely that he will be signing an extension at the end of next season. Demarcus Robinson made an unlikely return this season on a one year deal which shows the lack of interest in his services in the long-term plans. This could open the door to investing early draft capital in a wide receiver.

Here’s a closer look at the players who deserve first round consideration if Veach were to look at wide receivers.
