6. Los Angeles Chargers – Isaiah Simmons, LB, Clemson

Analysis by Arrowhead Addict contributor Drew Brooks

With three quarterbacks going before the Chargers’ pick, the options were down to reaching on quarterback Jordan Love, bolstering the offensive line, or taking the best player available: Isaiah Simmons.

Simmons is a versatile 6’4, 230 lb. linebacker out of Clemson who converted from safety and can find a place on any NFL team to fit in.

The Chargers desperately need offensive line help and only have two quarterbacks on their roster in Tyrod Taylor and Easton Stick, but Simmons is just too perfect to pass up. Having a player as versatile as Simmons is coveted by any defensive coordinator. With a solid defensive line in place, the Chargers built one of the best secondary units in the NFL in free agency. That leaves one position group left: the linebackers.

Enter Simmons. Simmons ran a stunning 4.39 second time in the 40-yard dash, the second fastest time for a linebacker since 2006. That’s not to mention his 39-inch vertical leap he posted. Simmons is a generational talent and just what the Chargers need to round out their defense.

While the Chargers still need to address their offense, they have six more picks to work with this draft. They can also still target a quarterback in free agency. But with three quarterbacks gone in the top five picks, the Chargers can’t pass up on Isaiah Simmons falling right into their lap. (Drew Brooks)
