The best players drafted by the Chiefs who never played for the team
5. Don Meredith
In the AFL’s inaugural selection process, the Dallas Texans selected hometown hero Don Meredith, a quarterback from Dallas-located Southern Methodist University. In the 3rd round of the NFL draft that year, the Chicago Bears also selected Meredith.
In a “Dandy” twist, prior to the draft, Meredith had already signed with the Cowboys. The NFL allowed the contract to stand, but Dallas did have to send a future draft pick to the Bears as compensation.
Meredith made three Pro Bowls in the last three seasons of his NFL career. In 1966, he was named the NFL Player of the Year. He played a total of nine years in the league, all for the Cowboys.
During his career, Meredith passed for over 17,000 yards and 135 touchdowns. He went on to be a sports commentator and actor after his playing days had ended.
