Final Word

While Rankin is certainly not a finished product that the Chiefs can bank on to be a Pro Bowler, he has solid potential. For the Chiefs, that is wonderful news. If anyone can bring the best out of an offensive lineman, it’s Chiefs offensive line coach Andy Heck, who has developed the likes of Laurent Duvernay-Tardif (6th round pick), Andrew Wylie (undrafted), and Austin Reiter (undrafted) and made them into starters. Of these players, none can compare to the upside that Rankin has. With an offseason of work, Rankin should be better than last season.

Rankin possesses a unique blend of power and instinct. If the Chiefs are able to refine his technique, he may be a quality starter. Further, Rankin has time to refine his craft as he is only 25 years old. If he shows promise before the season, he could compete for a starting job on the interior in a contract year.

The Chiefs have a number of unanswered questions going forward. Rankin happens to be one of the most intriguing ones that the Chiefs will need to answer before the draft. After adding Mike Remmers in free agency, one has to wonder what the plan is along the interior going forward and whether Rankin is a major part of the plan. Brett Veach and Andy Reid will need to ask themselves whether or not the upside is worth a shot in 2020 or beyond.

Next. Cesar Ruiz could be the Chiefs next great center. dark
