#3 – Buck Buchanan, Defensive Tackle

With the 1st overall selection in the 1963 AFL draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Grambling State defensive star Buck Buchanan. In retrospect, the fact that he was only a 19th round selection for the New York Giants in the NFL Draft that year ranks as one of the more baffling oversights in NFL Draft history.

Buchanan was an absolute stud who dominated the interior offensive line through every meaningful Chiefs game in the teams’ first decade and a half. Sacks were not an official category, but it’s undeniable that Buchanan was one of the best interior defensive linemen in the history of football.

In 13 seasons playing for the Chiefs, he never missed a game; and played in 189 regular and playoff seasons throughout his career. He was named to eight consecutive Pro Bowls and four consecutive 1st Team All-Pro squads.

“He revolutionized the game,” former Raider coach John Madden once said.
