The Kansas City Chiefs have interviewed San Diego State cornerback Luq Barcoo as part of their pre-draft preparation.

One of the more popular theories regarding the draft approach for the Kansas City Chiefs is that they’ll refill the secondary, specifically at cornerback, with some long-term potential and maybe even heavy investments. For their part, the Chiefs are at least interviewing the right candidates to fill those roles in the run up to next week’s 2020 NFL Draft.

The latest name linked to the Chiefs is San Diego State cornerback Luq Barcoo. Last season, Barcoo led every defender in college football with 9 interceptions in 13 games with the Aztecs. He also batted away another 16 passes and showed a strong knack for making plays on the ball. Those totals led him to be named a third-team All-American and first-team All Mountain West player.

Justin Melo from DraftWire notes that the Chiefs are just one of 20 teams who have asked for some of Barcoo’s time before the draft.

Barcoo is a 6’1 prospect with long arms (32 inches) who will fit well into a defense who loves such length from their corners. You can see his unofficial Pro Day results here (remember all such days were cancelled by schools, so many prospects are recording and distributing their own such videos).

For the Chiefs, there’s a need for quantity and quality at the position, although the urgency of the need was alleviated somewhat by the signing of Bashaud Breeland to a new one-year deal. The Chiefs no longer must bring in an immediate starter, although the situation returns to “dire” once the 2020 season is over. Consequently, the Chiefs need bodies and they need talented ones.

Brett Veach is excited about the addition of Antonio Hamilton in free agency and he’s also stated his confidence that Alex Brown could help this season after spending all of last year on the practice squad before hitting the active roster late. If either of those young guys can make the leap next to Charvarius Ward and Rashad Fenton, the Chiefs could have an impressive young core made up of disparate parts that came at a low investment.

As a former wide receiver turned corner, Barcoo is still growing into the role and limited tape might make it difficult to get a read on him. Will the Chiefs make a move? It’s impossible to know but the early returns at the position are impressive from Barcoo so far. It’s easy to see why so many teams are doing their homework to potentially coach him along.
