Former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards told Colin Cowherd that there’s no chance of a return or even more coaching after he’s done at ASU.

Arizona State head football coach Herm Edwards was the latest guest on The Herd with Colin Cowherd and the pair discussed a wide range of topics, from sensational Sun Devils quarterback Jayden Daniels to this year’s NFL Draft. Part of the discussion even drifted toward Edwards’ future.

At one point, Cowherd asked Edwards about his potential of leaping back to the National Football League given how well he would know the current crop of young players who are now in the league, having recruited many of them as part of a rising Pac-12 program. Instead, the former NFL head coach, which included a few seasons in Kansas City with the Chiefs, shut it down pretty quickly.

“No, this is it. This is my last stand right here,” Edwards told Cowherd. “I’m going to build a program and hopefully, we can win the Pac-12, and hopefully win a Rose Bowl and then hand it over to somebody else. That’s my goal.”

Edwards, who turns 66 at month’s end, should have clear perspective of what he wants to do as a coach since he took nearly a decade away from the sidelines to become an analyst for ESPN from 2009 through the end of 2017. It was then that Arizona State was successful in hiring him away from the world of television.

So far, the decision to re-join the college coaching ranks looks like a win for both sides. The Sun Devils went 7-6 in Edwards’ first season in Tempe and then improved to 8-5 last season, capped by a 20-14 win in the Sun Bowl over Florida State. Given the presence of young quarterback Jayden Daniels, the best is likely yet to come for ASU in 2020 and beyond.

Edwards was the Chiefs head coach from 2006 to 2008 and he went 15-33 in those three seasons. The Chiefs started well with a 9-7 record in his first year, but bottomed out thereafter. Edwards also began his NFL career as a scout with the Chiefs in 1990 and then switched to defensive backs coach from ’92 to ’95.
