#2 – Jared Allen, Defensive End

When we get to the top two draft picks in Chiefs’ fourth round history, we are talking about two of the most premier players in franchise history. The first of those was the 126th selection in the 2004 draft, defensive end Jared Allen.

Despite the fact that the Idaho State product spent only four years in Kansas City, his impact on the defensive was unquestioned and he was, without a doubt, one of the most productive pass rushers of his time.

In four years with the Chiefs, Allen amassed an incredible 43 sacks and missed only three games. He was fast, aggressive and unstoppable. In his final season in Kansas City, Allen had 15.5 sacks and was a 1st Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection.

At the end of that season, he and the Chiefs had a falling out; Allen believed the team was not offering him a fair contract and negotiations fell apart. Kansas City traded Allen to the Vikings for two 3rd round picks and a 1st round pick. Among those three selections the Chiefs selected a player who would start at left tackle for six seasons (Branden Albert); and a running back you may have heard of that is now the franchise all-time leading rusher (Jamaal Charles).

So for a single 4th round selection, Kansas City netted 43 sacks, a six year blind side protector, and a franchise record breaking running back. That’ll do.

For his part, Allen finished his 12 year NFL career with five Pro Bowl nods and four 1st Team All-Pro selections. He accumulated 136 sacks, currently 12th on the NFL’s All-Time list.
