Looking at NFL Draft prospects being mocked to the Kansas City Chiefs
Jonathan Taylor – RB – Wisconsin
Mock Draft – NFL.com – Charles Davis – 3/12/2020
Other Players Available: Cesar Ruiz (IOL, Michigan), Jeff Gladney (CB, TCU)
Jonathan Taylor is probably the best known running back in this draft class after his prolific career at Wisconsin. He also turned some heads with a great combine performance, highlighted by a 4.39 second time in the 40-yard dash at 226 pounds. Simply put, Taylor looks like a clear cut No. 1 running back in the NFL. He isn’t a big pass catching weapon and isn’t a typical short yardage back, but when it comes to running the football, he’s great at it. The downside for Taylor is all the wear and tear he has on his body after a ton of college carries.
My Take On This Pick:
If you go back and read my analysis of D’Andre Swift not being a smart pick because of the lack of value in taking a running back in the first round, you can amplify that even more for Taylor because of all the mileage on his tires. It just isn’t good business. The Chiefs could grab a back in the third round that might be slightly less talented than Taylor but wouldn’t have as much wear and tear and would be more likely to actually get a second contract with the team.
There weren’t a lot of players left on the board that I love in this mock, but I’d rather they reach a little on a cornerback (or interior offensive line) than throw away a first round pick on a running back.
Next up, the first of a couple options at cornerback.
