The Kansas City Chiefs watch another former player leave in free agency with the news that the Chicago Bears have signed Jordan Lucas.

The Chicago Bears have turned to a familiar face for head coach Matt Nagy to help bolster their special teams and secondary units with the signing of safety Jordan Lucas.

Lucas has spent the last couple years in Kansas City as part of Dave Toub’s celebrated special teams units and as important depth at safety, especially in 2018 when injuries and a lack of top-end talent created major concerns in the defensive backfield. Lucas then hit unrestricted free agency this year and the Chiefs made no overtures, at least known about to the press, to keep him.

The Chiefs initially traded for Lucas in a preseason deal before the 2018 regular season with the Miami Dolphins. General manager Brett Veach traded a 2020 7th round selection in exchange for Lucas (hence part of the reason the Chiefs only have five picks in this year’s draft).

Lucas played in 30 total games for the Chiefs over the last two seasons and made 4 total starts (both in 2018). He had 39 tackles, 3 passes defended, 1 sack and 1 interception in that span for K.C. He even started one playoff game for the Chiefs in 2018. He played in all three postseason games for the Chiefs this year but only on special teams snaps.

For the Bears, Lucas comes with the same traits but also with championship experience. Nagy can only hope Lucas’ presence helps to shore up the Bears special teams unit, which was ranked 23rd overall by Rick Gosselin earlier this offseason.
