Veteran running backs who should interest KC Chiefs in free agency
By Grant Tuttle
Former Detroit and Denver running back C.J. Anderson
C.J. Anderson is a bruiser. In limited action over the past two seasons, he has terrified opposing linebackers. Anderson can drive tacklers up the field and push a pile, however, his speed is a question mark for a fit with the Chiefs offense. Anderson is not known for being a great pass-catcher which seems to be a must in the Chiefs offense.
Veach has stated how much he loves big running backs in the past. If they can push the pile and create their own alleys, they are certainly an asset to an offense. Anderson may get a long look from Kansas City.
Former Jets and Jaguars running back Chris Ivory
Chris Ivory is among the most intriguing running back options for the Kansas City Chiefs. Ivory has never finished an entire season but has had a few enormous games in his career against tough competition. In 2013 he posted 103 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots. Furthermore, in more recent history, Ivory turned in a 108-yard game against the Chiefs in 2016.
Littered throughout his career, Ivory has had good moments. Unfortunately, he has never been able to showcase consistency. As a member of a committee, Ivory makes a lot of sense. Brett Veach will need to consider his age and ability to contribute to the offense. While he is a less sexy name in free agency, Ivory could be an interesting piece to add.
Former Atlanta running back Devonta Freeman
It seems like it was only yesterday Devonta Freeman was considered a key cog in the powerful Atlanta Falcons offense. In 2015 and 2016, Freeman was a very productive back paired with Tevin Coleman. In subsequent years, his production has dropped. This could be due to his own decline, or it could be due to the struggles of the Atlanta Falcons as a team. If he can find production anywhere close to the 1,078 rushing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 462 receiving yard that he posted in 2016, the Chiefs would have a steal.
In my opinion, Freeman is a risky player to spend much money on, but an excellent addition for the right price. It will be up to Reid and Veach to determine what the cause of Freeman’s struggles have been and whether he deserves a shot with the Chiefs in 2020. Freeman is an incredibly interesting proposition for any team in the NFL.
