The Baltimore Ravens are set to release Brandon Carr before the new league year begins instead of exercising a team option, making him a free agent.

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to add a few new faces to the roster in the secondary this offseason, but one of them might be a bit more familiar than the others—that is, if they decide to bring back Brandon Carr.

Carr was under contract with the Baltimore Ravens, but the team has reportedly decided, per Aaron Wilson, not to exercise their team option for the 2020 season. That means Carr will be a free agent.

The Chiefs will remember Carr as the team’s former fifth round pick back in the 2008 NFL Draft. He spent his first four years with the Chiefs as an instant starter alongside Brandon Flowers before taking big money to play for the Dallas Cowboys during his first run at free agency.

After playing out his five years in Dallas, he hit free agency once again and landed with the Baltimore Ravens for each of the last three years. This year, however, his $7 million price tag was going to be too steep on a team already loaded in the secondary. As Carr gets ready to turn 34-years-old in May, the Ravens decided to move on.

For the Chiefs, a reunion with Carr makes sense on a few levels. The story of a homecoming is nice, but Carr clearly has plenty in the tank to offer on the field. Carr was a solid performer all over the secondary for the Ravens last year and he brings a versatility he did not have his first time around in K.C. with playing experience at safety and corner.

In addition, Carr has never missed a single start since he was drafted. That brings his total to 192 consecutive starts. The Chiefs could use some reliable help at the position after watching Kendall Fuller leave in free agency, and Carr could step in as the versatile performer for a fourth safety at times as well. In addition, the Ravens had luck when using Carr on corner blitzes in 2019 as he racked up a career high 2 sacks and 7 quarterback hits.
